Abstract

English abstract

The purpose of this article is to discuss how action research can contribute to a more democratic practice, and what the nature of the changes is when the goal is democracy. In a time characterized by many changes in society, the desire of action research for democratic changes in practice differs from the changes that tend to be implemented in practice. We argue that this points to the importance of pausing to reflect and changing perspective. The article discusses how changing perspective in practice can contribute to democratic changes.

The theoretical point of departure is Critical Utopian Action Research and democratic changes in practice based on everyday life (bottom up). This is combined with a radical concept of democracy derived from Rancière, which emphasizes that liberation is not something we can do for others, but something that happens from an assumption of equality. We wish to present a critical perspective on understandings of democracy, which are oriented towards teaching others to participate, thus assuming that some people are not able to participate.

The focal point of the discussion is two research projects investigating children’s participation at art museums and young people’s participation in municipal health promotion initiatives. Through two examples, the article unfolds how the methodological choices applied in the empirical processes contribute to the analysis and the creation of democratic changes in practice.
