English abstract

Tracing the journey of an evaluation formula

Performance management has become an aspect of quality assurance and the institutionalisation of research and development at university colleges in Denmark. Taking its point of departure in organisational theory, the article follows an evaluation formula for performance management on its journey from the university world until it is translated and materialised in the Balanced Scorecard used for evaluation and put to work as the ‘soft governance’ of research in the university college sector. The point of departure is the translation processes for the conceptualisation of this evaluation formula at a university college in reference to the theories found in Røvik (2006, 2017), as well as Czarniawskas (2008). In the analysis, the journey of the evaluation formula for performance management is revealed by following the central translations of the formula: firstly, from university to university college; secondly, inside the university college organisation. The analysis reveals an important aspect of the institutionalisation of research and development practices at university colleges and in the university college sector at large, thus facilitating a better understanding of the implementation of performance management concepts. Starting from a certain puzzlement about the nature of evaluation in this sector, the aim is to reach a better understanding of the proliferation of evaluation, and of why the formulas have come to look the way they do. These findings could aid the design of a study of how the evaluation formula is proliferated throughout organisations.
}, number={2}, journal={Forskning og forandring}, author={Thormar, Laura Perez}, year={2019}, month={Dec.}, pages={124–146} }
