1. The purpose is to explore the potential for systematic involvement of relatives based on nurses’ work experiences.

The theoretical framework is Habermas’ main work “The Communicative Action” (2004). The concept of system and lifeworld constitutes the meaning of a hospital organization as a context for the parties’ communication, and the concept of communicative action provides a perspective on the parties’ communication.

The analysis of the action research process shows that it may be problematic to try improving the conditions for both users and employees of an organization through one initiative. Consequently, the introduction of a systematic practice of involvement becomes dilemmatic. On the one hand, the introduced discharge meetings and written information to the relatives mean that all relatives are included and receive information about the patient’s trajectory. On the other hand, the change has led to the escalation of system orientated and strategic action. Furthermore, the development has diminished the possibilities for spontaneous communication between relatives and nurses, which theoretically is colonization of the lifeworld.

In addition, the analysis points to the fact that initiatives that aim to involve relatives must be rooted in the system’s written communication in order to become properly anchored in praxis - and thus lead to systematic involvement.
}, number={1}, journal={Forskning og forandring}, author={Bernild, Camilla and Liveng, Anne and Overgaard, Dorthe}, year={2018}, month={May}, pages={51–77} }
