English abstract

This article presents and discusses different ambitions of change that are in play in and around change-oriented research in the field of education. Based on a critique of dominating understandings of change for resulting in authoritarian and technical perspectives, which marginalize political and normative dimensions of education, the article argues for the importance of working with democratization as a central change ambition. The article argues that this has implications for the understanding of both pedagogical work and of the results of the change processes. Taking as its starting point a research project that illustrates these change ambitions, namely a Critical-Utopian Action Research project in which employees in child care institutions explored and developed pedagogical work concerning the children’s well-being from below, the article discusses the implications of these ambitions in practice. The article argues for a concept of professionalism as a way of understanding the change processes that this kind of research project can initiate.
ER -
